10k PB smashed, but the pot is soured... (10 Miles Total)

Smashed my 10k pb today, I ran 33:25, in my Saucony Fastwitch at the Scotstoun Athletic Centre placing 18th in the field. Local athlete Tom Bracegirdle finished 35 seconds ahead of me in 16th place. I shared the pace with Chris Wilson of the University of Durham throughout the whole race, with him beating me by 3 seconds, due to an ill timed surge by myself resulting from miscounting of the laps by the pair of us (I went a lap early!). The support from my University team-mates out there was fantastic, I had Richard 'Ice-Man' Weir, Scotty, Mo & Raj at the 200m mark, vaulting Kate Dennison on the back straight & Sophie Allcock at the 300m mark. Weir clued me in when I thought I had 200m to run that I actually had 600m to run (doh!). For the record, here was my pre-race procedure:

1:30 pre race - 20 minute warmup jog in full sweats, and 150mg caffeine (form of pro-plus)

1:00 pre race - 20 minutes stretching and light drills, in full sweats. Void bladder & bowels.

00:40 pre race - 10 minute warmup jog, in full sweats
00:30 pre race - light strides, t-shirt & track suit bottoms

00:20 pre race - void bladder, registration, strip down & sort out footwear.

(Throughout this period I was making sure I was fully hydrated by sipping at 2 bottles of Lucozade Hydroactive)

11:35 Race 10 k, 33:25

At about 15:00, I went to see a physio (very expert, lectures in the subject) at the courtesy facilities available. I have a right combination of problems. Essentially I have a trochantic bursitis stemming from weak gluteus minimus muscles, resulting in chronically tight gluteus maximus & Tensor fascia lata (compensatory effect, peforming leg external rotation). I've been given exercise to strengthen the glute min's & stretches for the other groups. I'm quite hopeful on the recovery front now, the physio reckons that if I do this work, its only going to be 2 weeks before my muscles are firing healthily & I will probably realize a performance increase.

In today's BUSA's, Kate finished an admirable second in the womens pole vault, scooping 7 points for the Uni & a big, juicy silver medal for herself. Congrats babe!

Mileage Total For Week: 36 Miles

On this day:

A cacophony of coaches, an unusual rest day.

Odd day today, especially for a rest day. I've ended associations with my coach (mutually agreed to be fair) about 24 hours before my event at the BUSA's. Also spent ages driving the minibus up to Glasgow, which hasn't done my hip any favours. I'm now using Feldene gel (loaned to me by my friend & Staffs middle-distance sensation, 'Ice-Man Weir', cheers buddy!) & Movelat. No point stretching the area now, I'm just going to let it calm down. I'm a bit tired now, but I pigged out on pizza & potato gnocchi tonight, so at least I'll be carb-laden tomorrow.

Newspaper count up to 4! Plus the 'Old Man' could have achieved Berkshire honours...

Well, its official. News of my victory was published in 4 'local rags', specifically -
  • Reading Post
  • Bracknell Times
  • Crowthorne & Sandhurst Times
  • Ascot News
Wow! I love me, when do I get a statue? ;)

Also, my old man could have walked and won the Berkshire Men's 50 title. The only reason he didn't run was on my advice. I felt that as the longest run he'd done recently was an hour, the injury risk would be too great [kick's self in frustration].

This is my last post before I head 'oop north'. If I cant get access to a computer over the next few days, I'll update you all on Monday. Otherwise, 'Ciao For Now'...

5.5 Miles recovery with strides untimed

Ran the Cumberland Way, Kennet Canal, Circuit Lane loop with 'the Old Man' (my Dad, Neville Taylor) in my New Balance 834's today. Didn't time it, just worked off Nev's heart rate to keep it easy for him. Too windy to warrant timing my Bath Road Time Trial section, so I just ran it as a stride.
Hip is playing me up pretty bad, but some of my 'Old Dear's' Body Balance stretches seem to be relieving it wonders, so I might start doing that again after a 2 year lull! Also going to hit it with Movelat gel and ice.

ArticHeat Ice Vest has arrived!

As usual, the post was late but my ArticHeat vest has arrived from Oz! It looks pretty nice quality (wicking type material!), the charging protocol is pretty well explained (more on this later), and I cant wait to use it. However, I'm going to have to, as we aren't likely to see 70 degree temperatures in the UK for quite a while yet...

Apparantly charging the vest is pretty simple. Before first use I need to immerse in water for 15 minutes. Then before freezing it I need to immerse it in water for 5 minutes. Then after being frozen for 2 hours, it stays cool for up to 2 hours. It can also be charged off ice-slush of EXTREMELY COLD water, by immersion for 30 minutes, but then it will only stay cool for 15 minutes. I may invest in an electric freezer for the car off ebay, if this thing proves to be any good.

40 Minutes Easy, 6 Miles approx.

Well for my third run (!!!) I ran 40 minutes out & back along the Thames tow path from Palmer Park Stadium in my New Balance 834's. The shoes felt good (as this series of New Balance's always seem to for me), but my left hip/arse cheek is still a little niggling. Will ice it & stretch the area out tonight.

3 Miles @ Half Marathon pace, on track. 6 Miles total

Went down to the track at Bracknell today and, after a 20 minute warmup in my Diadora Mythos Axler's, ran 3 miles on the track at Half-Marathon effort with Rob in my Saucony Fastwitch Speed. It was wet, windy (but not ridiculously so) but ideal temperature. I ran the following splits:

5:36
5:33
5:27
[16:36 Total]

All in all, it wasn't as mind boggling as I thought it might be. I just broke it down into individual laps, and once each lap was over, that was the last I thought about it. I felt mentally strong runnning the session, and the pace didn't feel at all severe, even though I lost some propulsion due to the poor traction available.

On a side note, I then ran a couple of laps cooldown in my Nike Free 5.0's. I've been walking in them since last September, so I thought it was time to give them a try a running. Suprisingly they felt like plausible running shoes (gob-smackingly nice actually)! I think I'm going to use them from now on for whenever I'm scheduled something like 3 Miles Easy AM.

Just going to go down the running club now & give them their team prize trophy & 'bask in my glory!' ;)

25 minutes easy AM, 3.5 Miles approx

Ran with Rob (who now has his own training blog!) down on the Thames towpath, 25 minutes easy in my NB 832's. It was muddy as hell, meaning we came back ditched. Still, I prefer it like that rather than the tarmac-ing they seem obsessed with locally at the moment, talk about ruining an area of natural beauty! Left fibial head (around the pelvis) hurts, feels like a pull on an insertion. Must monitor it.

5.5 Miles approx

Ran the Circuit Lane, Kennet & Avon Canal, Cumbrian Way loop today in my Diadora Mythos Axler's with Rob & my 'Old Man' (although he was trailing, he was using it as a tempo run). Legs felt good, pace didn't feel to hard and we clocked 33:45 for the loop which is excellent for an easy run. Shoes feel pretty darn slick, legs are niggle free, I felt pretty pucka (especially given the lack of breakfast before my run), life is good! Feel like a run this afternoon, may ask Andy if it's an option...

Mathematics 101- Trophy valuation

Well, being the tight-arsed swine that I am I perused a few brochures and found out the value of my various prizes. I took away £270 worth of prizes, including £160 worth of Irish crystal (Decanter £105, glasses £55). Counter-intuitively the men's open trophy was worth more than the men's overall trophy. Go figure! The club also took away £126 worth of team prizes for the Roadrunner's trophy cabinet.

Rest day- A quicker time?

Hmmmm.... Interesting. I'm being credited with 1:12:57 for yesterdays run. Have a look at the BBC Radio Berkshire site and you'll see what I mean! Must have fell into a time warp en-route yesterday. Marty McFly, eat your heart out! Can't moan too much, as it'll make AW look better for me. Also heard myself being interviewed on the 'wireless' this morning, I sound like a bastard mix of a farmer, a London wide-boy' & an imbecile {cringe}. Lord, take me now!

Someone also put a spontaneous congratualations thread on the RunnersWorld UK forums, which was nice. Never expected my win to get this much attention. Thanks 'Muttley', 'Barkles', 'Cougie', 'Evil Pixie', 'popsider' & 'Drew' (accurate as of 10:17)!

On the training front, very little to report, as its ANOTHER rest day (grrrr...)

A hollow victory? Nahhh......
(17 Miles Total approx.)

A rather odd day today. I got up, had beans-on-toast at 6am, went to Bracknell, 20 minute jog warmup, queue up for the lavatory, then won a half-marathon. I pretty much lead gun to tape, but I never expected 1:14:57 to win it in my wildest dreams! I was interviewed by BBC Radio Berkshire a couple of times for my sporting achievement (they're sending me the tapes), which I've never experienced before. What does one do when presented with a priviledge such as this? Talk shite of course! I must of sounded like I was high on crack!

When I realized I was by myself up front I just relaxed (from mile 5 onwards), but I went with the manic start and came good! I also picked up a somewhat substantial trophy haul for my efforts.

Left to right, front to back: 1st Men's Team Trophy, Berkshire Gold Medal, Overall Winner Trophy, Cut crystal glasses, Open Men's Winner Trophy, Cut crystal decanter.

Of course my pride and joy is this little beauty -

I've been waiting so long to get a county individual gold, and now I've finally got my hands on it, all I can think about is the build quality (or lack thereof!). Still, I'm as pleased as punch!

The team did pretty well too. We picked up first male overall (me!), first senior male (me again!), first woman overall (Leslie Whiley), first vet woman (Leslie Whiley), first 60+ (Jackie Jeffries) woman, second male vet 40 (Edward Dodwell), third male vet 40 (Ed Dodwell), first male vet 60 ('The Master', Roy MacNeil), and men's & women's team prizes! Cripes!

Day off tomorrow me thinks. You can find my next weeks schedule on the post above. I can only hope I'm as happy with my BUSA result in 6 days time...

Mileage Total For The Week- 42 Miles

Low mileage this week, considering that for the three weeks prior I recorded 75, 70 & 82 Miles respectively. Having said that, crash training does involve a pretty extreme taper. I'm looking forward to after the BUSA's, I'll be able to ramp my mileage back up again then. I'm getting bored; I miss my training runs!

On a slightly different note, I spent the afternoon building this hi-fi rack (but with stainless steel pillars instead of gold ones.

Only took me about an hour, which is a ridiculously short amount of time for me! No missing parts, no scratched parts, absolutely pristine. I'm dead proud!

20 Minutes Easy - The heat is on...

20 minutes easy this morning in my spanking, new Diadora Mythos Axler's around the Calcot flood banks. Not sold on the shoes yet, but they are generally very comfortable, and the midfoot shank is fairly unobtrusive, just how I like it!
Felt rather sluggish this morning (almost the opposite of Friday's run), sort of heavy footed, hence the title of this post. No point worrying about it however, as I cant do anything before my race tommorow. Probably just a product of doing my run 20 minutes after rising at 8:10 AM.

Importing an 'ArticHeat Ice Vest'

I placed an order for one of these today!

Its an ArticHeat Ice Vest & it should help reduce levels of heat stress during my Summer 5k's & 10k's. Apparently the British Team was equipped with them at Athens (not sure if that's a positive or negative referral!). To my experience Australian shipping is pretty good (i.e. when I've imported Emu Oil, speaking of which, I'm running low, hmmm.....), so I hope to receive it in a few weeks. That should be well in time for the peak of Summer (apparently this sort of pre-cooling should only be used at 70 degrees +). I shall obviously keep you all informed.

40 Minutes Easy

Not a lot to report really. Ran the Kennet & Avon Canal loop today, which I extended by climbing back up Mill Lane (NB 832's again!). I didn't time it, but I felt pretty darn good! Its amazing what a day off can do. Even though I felt sluggish all day yesterday, its sure done the trick. My run even contained a few pick-ups, including a sprint over my Bath Road Time-Trial section, and every thing felt like it was flowing. I'm feeling pretty good about Sunday now.

Rest day- Robin Hood Marathon entered...

Nothing too much to report today really. Pulled my finger out and entered the Experian Robin Hood Marathon, which I guess is a good thing. Its the first marathon I've committed to since I've found my new level of form and since the horror that was Berlin (I ended up jogging round it, as I'd paid for my flights & accomodation, despite an injury I acquired in the build-up). I know I should be able to comfortably absorb the necessary mileage needed to train for a marathon now; I just hope I'm not jinxed.
Also on the note of race entry, I also recieved confirmation for both my own & Robert Prady's entry into the County 5k track championships at the John Nike Athletics Stadium, Bracknell. Now all we've got to do is persuade Nigel to enter!
Also found out tonight that Toby Laver isn't doing the Bracknell Half Marathon, so thats one less person to compete with for County honours then (phew!).

On this day:

CRASH BANG WALLOP: 4 x 1 Mile, 2 minutes recovery

Well I finally figured out where crash training gets its name from. I was scheduled to go down the track & do:

4 x 1 Mile (in 5:10 average), 2 minutes recovery.
What I actually achieved was:

1.5 Mile warmup,
5:08, 5:18, drop out,
3 mile cooldown.
6.5 Miles Total
(4.5M in NB 832's, 2M in Saucony Fastwitch Speed)

I knew I'd blown the session after the first rep. With the prevailing wind conditions (14 mph) & the 'skid-pan-esque' track, upon which I was getting no traction, it felt more like I'd ran a sub 5:00 mile. I felt like I was blowing my beans 1 lap into the second rep, and with the time at the end of it I felt it was time to call it a day (I could see the trend of the session there and then!). I know I made the right decision as I felt like tripe during my cooldown, which is quite unusual for me. On a positive note, I shared the reps with Rob fairly well, and actually managed to draft off him properly today. I also feel I know where I went wrong over the last few days to produce such a pony session. I believe it may be a combination of the following factors:
  • Carbohydrate poor meal last night after weights session
  • Too many hills, and possibly too much mileage, over last 4 days
  • Weights (when unused to them) the day before speedwork probably not a great idea
  • Too pacy a run yesterday
  • Chronic lack of sleep due to new dog

Still I guess that's the point of crash training though, I'm meant to feel lousy to certain extent, and I can correct any/all of these oversights next time I'm in a non-crash block & trying to achieve decent times. I'm glad I'm easing off now though, I do feel a bit hollow, and need to freshen up for my half marathon, big-time!

Just to make myself feel a little bit better, did you know that most Kenyan elites cant manage 10 press-ups? Not that they need to, its not like man runs on his arms, but at least I'm better than them at something!

45 Minutes Easy/Steady + Weights

Left to right: Nigel Grove, Craig Taylor, Rob Prady. Wayfarer's Relays 2004

Ran with Rob Prady & Nigel Grove (two decent club runners, and excellent training partners) tonight from SOLL Leisure Gymnasium, Gillot's Leisure Centre, Henley-on-Thames. We ran a variation on our 7 mile loop (through Harpsden & down the Sonning Common Road), but instead of climbing up Gillot's hill to finish, we climbed up a parallel off-road one. It was relatively conversational for one of our runs, but I still reckon we covered a good 7 miles. Ran in my NB 832's (as usual), hips still a little sore but definitely getting better. Must think about doing my hillwork somewhere else next time!

I also followed the run with a weights session, as below:

  • Chest Press, 6 sets, 12 reps, 32kg
  • Pull up, 3 Sets, Reasonable Failure
  • Dips, 2 Sets, Reasonable Failure
  • Shoulder Press, 2 Sets, 20 reps, 25kg
  • Plank, 90 seconds
  • Boxing Situps, 10 reps
  • 'Chinny' Situps, 20 Reps each leg

On a side note, did you know that Kenyan athletes regularly drink animal blood? As Ingrid Kristiansen was a reknowned fan of Blood Pudding & the record breaking Chinese LD runners regularly drank turtle blood to 'fortify their bodies against the rigours of intense training', maybe there is something in it? Well, it's an excuse to eat more Black Pudding anyway!

Monthly weigh in: 5lb loss!

Weighed myself this morning and it appears I have realized a 5lb loss since the end of Febuary! The figures from my Tanita BF-572 Bodyfat scales are as below:

Weight: 9st 11.2lb
Bodyfat: 5.7%

If I were to use my coach's scales, I would read another 4lb lighter (his under-read loads), which puts me pretty close to my optimum racing weight. Ideally I'd like to drop another 7lbs by the end of the Summer (in time for my Marathon), but I'm not going to rush it, as long as the performance gains come, I'm happy.

Second run, with my old man. 60 minutes Recovery/Easy in my NB 832's. Ran down to Temple Rise and came back along the Kenet & Avon canal via the Southcote estates (mixed road & offroad). Felt pretty bouncy. Ran my timed section along the Bath Road in 38 seconds! First time I've managed to do that by myself, and a pretty mean feat considering this weekends training density.

1:15 Steady/Hard

First run of the day, scheduled to do 2 hours, as part of my crash training for the County Half Marathon Championships & the BUSA 10K. I couldn't find a training partner for that so I ran 1:15 Steady/Hard around The Lookout at Bracknell with Robert in my NB 832 (perfect shoe, completely pain free, must buy more...). Fantastic place to run, challenging climbs, fun descents & entirely offroad. Good temperature for a change aswell, so all in all perfect running conditions for a change!
We really hacked it for the first 25 minutes, backed off for the next 15 & picked it up again for the last 15 minutes of the lap. I then ran the last 20 minutes by myself as Rob turned his ankle towards the end of the lab. Felt pretty good in all, strong & fast, could have gone longer if it hadn't have been for the time constraints, bodes well for the Bracknell, also an undulating route. Hips a tiny bit sore from yesterdays hill session, as per usual!

Mileage Total For The Week- 82 Miles

This week I hit 82 miles, and it was easy. I repeat, 82 miles! Its the 3rd highest mileage week I've ever recorded. It didn't involve any 20 miles runs, no stupidly long doubles, just pure consistency (i.e. no day off). Got loads of decent quality runs in, a couple of excellent sessions (400's & hills) and I'm completely niggle free! Pretty happy, but its time to back off now for next weeks half marathon. Shame too, as I reckon I could have held this for another week, but there's no point logging the miles if I dont realise the benefits in my races.

Training Schedule for Week beginning April 17th

Just received 'King Dick's' orders for the week, and Im somewhat ambiguous. We're going to try crash training me for the Bracknell Half Marathon (doubles as the County Half Marathon championship), as I've got nothing to lose. Not sure about that, as I'd like to be able to walk by the end of the week, but I'm game for a laugh. Here goes...

Sunday: 2 hours / 17 Miles

Monday: 35 minutes / 5 Miles

Tuesday: 4 x Mile, 2 minutes recovery. Eyeballs out, on the track. Dont worry about times, 'dieing a death', etc. Its purely for training stimulus

Wednesday: Rest

Thursday: 35 minutes

Friday: Rest

Saturday: 20-30 minutes

Sunday: BRACKNELL HALF MARATHON (sub 1:15)

Should be a tough week. "Lets be having you!!!"

Hill session (10 Miles Total)

Ran the 8 reps of the Prospect Park Hill/Fartlek Loop with Blenker's and Rob, in my New Balance RX240 spikes. Took approximately 30 minutes & with my warmup & 5 mile cooldown it totalled approximately 10 miles. Found the first couple of repetitions hard, but once I'd setteled in I got in a groove. Used it as a substitute for the 20 minutes at 5 mile pace I had scheduled; based on the feeling in my legs I'd have to say it was probably harder! Legs felt dead bouncy in the cooldown though. On a side note, Rob felt dead sick after the session. Love that lactate! Blenkers also dicked me on a couple of reps too, barstard!!!

New books!!!

After about 6 weeks of waiting, my new running books have finally arrived, all the way from the U.S of A, courtesy of Amazon.com. The tomes include:

After a brief flick, I would say that the hard to get hold of, Train Hard, Win Easy is the most interesting read (expect to see a few extracts from that over the coming weeks!). The Lydiard stuff is pretty interesting too. Its a lot more readable in his own book, Running To The Top, but the integrated program presented by Benson & Ray looks extremely inclusive and well rounded. I may talk to Andy (my Coach) about it & see if we can use any of the material on my own schedule.
