On this day:

Physio session- knee niggles...

I saw Wendy Davies again this morning for diagnosis on my right knee. Its appears to be quite a minor complaint, as I'm not getting restriction of movement or crescendo pain, and weight bearing isn't a significant problem. She reckons it stems from my right iliotibial band being too tight, thus pulling my knee cap laterally. This has resulted in my Vastus Medialis tightening up in compensation. This tightness in the muscles surrounding the joint has put tension on the insertions of the relevant muscles (felt through the vas med insertion, as it is the weakest of the muscles involved) & tendons that stabilize the kneecap. Solution is:

a) Stretch the Iliotibial Band
b) Massage the Vastus Medialis muscle
c) Mobilize the kneecap

Whilst I was there she stripped the ITB, massaged the Vas Med, hit the insertion of the Vas Med with Ultrasound & stretched out the involved muscle groups. Apparantly, heat, ice or anti-inflammatories aren't really going to help this one out. I'm quite pleased overall, as I haven't done any significant damage to myself, and the solution is quite economical (i.e. no repeat physio appointments). Now all that is left to do is see how I fare later, at the track...
